Prostate cancer is the most common solid tumour in men and the second cancerous cause of death in developed countries. Early diagnosis is essential to reduce the number of related deaths, but the screening for this type of menace remains controversial, mainly due to the poor specificity and sensitivity of PSA, the Prostate Specific Antigen test -usually prescribed to detect the first signs of an enlarged prostate- responsible for a high percentage of unnecessary biopsies and which gives a high number of false positives. INNOPROST is part of this scenario, a project born from the scientific and industrial collaboration between the Romolo Hospital -Urological Clinic and Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre- and the Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro. This intervention made it possible to identify a repeatable scientific procedure that allows, through the proteomic analysis of sera and urine -and no longer through the collection of biological tissue samples- to identify new malignant pathology-specific tumour markers, thus reducing diagnosis time and invasive procedures, increasing the degree of examination predictivity, making it possible to establish the aggressiveness of the tumour already in the diagnostic phase, hence increasing the percentage of patients that survive this malignant pathology, while also helping to define a personalized post-surgical path. The results of the INNOPROST experimentation have a threefold value: scientific, regarding the knowledge of the proteome linked to the development and progression of prostate cancer; technological, because it was able to define and standardize a fast and reliable mass spectrometry technology for early diagnostics; industrial, because it will make it possible to develop sialilate peptides kits that could be used clinically and, therefore, industrialized in the near future. The research project was also an opportunity to develop another important tool, namely a database for the insertion and integration of clinical information and spectrometric data of patients, to facilitate sharing information between study groups and lay the foundations for the multivariate analyses envisaged within the project. Finally, the acquired knowledge made it possible to innovate in the management of biological samples databases.
