Intervention

Examining the differences between bacterial and viral infections and personalising therapies for the respiratory system are the two driving topics behind the research activities of MediFarmaGen, an academic spin-off of the University of Catanzaro created in 2018, and made up of a multidisciplinary team with clinical pharmacology, clinical pathology, nutrition and marketing expertise. Thanks to this intervention, MediFarmaGen can carry out an experimentation activity in order to market rapid tests and screenings for outpatient and home-patients, to achieve diagnostic and therapeutic personalization. In fact, being able to identify early biological molecules that grow or appear only as a response to a specific damage of the respiratory system (upper and lower airways), and polymorphisms, is the main objective of the research, with the ultimate aim of reducing improper drug prescription, to increase therapy adherence, and to reduce the development of adverse reactions and drug interactions. In the current scenario characterized by the Coronavirus emergency, the first research topic regarding the differences between bacterial and viral infection has taken particular relevance, since it takes place in an exceptional contingency that can allow to concentrate the experimentation on the identification of specific elements that lead to this type of respiratory infection. As for the therapeutic aspect, in addition to diagnostics, the project aims as well at identifying personalised therapies, in a research context in which pharmacogenomics allows us to understand how patients’ genomic mapping affects the response to drugs.
